Cold Water Changes the Rules
Bay water temperatures slide through the 60s in October and keep falling from there. Below about 70 degrees, an unexpected swim stops being an inconvenience and starts being a safety problem: cold shock can trigger an involuntary gasp and rapid breathing in the first minute, long before hypothermia is a factor.
The fix is simple. Wear your life jacket whenever you're underway in the shoulder season — it keeps your head up through that first minute, which is the one that matters. Keep a dry change of clothes aboard, tell someone your plan, and if someone goes in, get them out and warm quickly rather than waiting to see how they feel. Cool water is part of fall boating; respecting it is what keeps the season enjoyable.
