November on the Chesapeake

November is the Bay's quiet season, and for boaters who stay in, it can be one of the most rewarding months of the year. The summer crowds are long gone, the water is clear, and the late-fall light over the South River and the open Bay is some of the best of the year. Calm, crisp days between cold fronts are made for a last cruise or an unhurried afternoon at anchor.

The margins are thinner now. Water temperatures keep dropping, northwest winds behind each front can build quickly, and there are far fewer boats around if something goes wrong. Check the marine forecast before every trip, wear your life jacket, dress for colder air than you expect, and let someone ashore know your plan. Pick your days carefully and November can feel like having the Bay to yourself.
