October on the Chesapeake

If September is the Bay's best-kept secret, October is the reward for those who stay in the water. The air turns crisp and clear, visibility stretches for miles, and the first color shows along the wooded shorelines of the South River and its creeks. The crowds are gone, the nettles are gone, and the anchorages are quiet.

The trade-offs are real but manageable. Days are noticeably shorter, water temperatures are falling, and the first strong northwesterlies arrive behind each cold front — great sailing, but worth planning around. Dress in layers, keep a life jacket on when it's blowing, and build a daylight margin into every trip home. Some of the best days of the year are still ahead.
