Oyster Season Opens October 1
Maryland's public oyster season traditionally opens October 1, and with it the Bay's working fleet gets back on the water. Hand tongers and patent tongers go first, followed on November 1 by the skipjacks — the last commercial fleet in North America still working under sail, and a living piece of Chesapeake history.
For recreational boaters, that means more workboats on the water through the fall and winter. Give them a wide berth when they're working, slow your wake, and watch for gear. And if you've never eaten a Chesapeake oyster in the month it was harvested, October is the time to fix that.
