Thomas Point Shoal Light
At the mouth of the South River sits Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse — the last screwpile lighthouse still standing in its original location on the Chesapeake. Built in 1875, the hexagonal cottage on iron pilings has become one of the most photographed structures on the Bay.
It makes for a perfect short cruise or dinghy trip on a calm afternoon. Approach with respect for the shoal that gives the lighthouse its name — the surrounding water can be tricky, so keep an eye on your chart. The Coast Guard maintains it as an active aid to navigation, and the U.S. Lighthouse Society offers occasional tours if you want a closer look.
