Oyster Season Opens October 1

Maryland's public oyster season traditionally opens October 1, and with it the Bay's working fleet gets back on the water. Hand tongers and patent tongers go first, followed on November 1 by the skipjacks — the last commercial fleet in North America still working under sail, and a living piece of Chesapeake history.

St. Michaels by Boat

St. Michaels is the classic Eastern Shore overnight from the South River — across the Bay, up Eastern Bay, and into the Miles River, a comfortable half-day cruise for most boats. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, the waterfront restaurants, and the walkable town make it an easy place to spend a night or two.

September Is Prime Time on the Bay

Ask longtime Chesapeake boaters for their favorite month and most will say September. The humidity breaks, the sea nettles thin out, the weekend crowds head home, and the first cold fronts bring steady northwesterlies that make for some of the best sailing of the year. The water stays warm well into October.
